Even venerated Time magazine isn’t immune to hackers. The magazine’s annual online poll of the top 100 most influential people in government, science, technology and the arts was flooded with fake votes by followers of 4chan, the popular online message board.

The 4chan hackers took advantage of the lack of authentication or validation of the online process and used ‘”autovoters” to inundate the poll with millions of votes for “moot,” a pseudonym of Christopher Poole, operator of 4chan, according to Folio.

In addition to voting moot to the top of the list, the hackers apparently rearranged the top 21 names so that the first letter of their names—looking down the list—spelled out the phrase “Marblecake Also the Game.” Voting went live March 19. This is an example of clever, exacting hacking — but it also shows how much a high-profile property is at stake when the right people are motivated.

It’s almost impossible to open a Web browser, RSS reader or Twitter without being bombarded with information about the outbreak and its spread worldwide. Researchers at The Ohio State University are using Macs to map the outbreak down to the street level, tracking cases overnight.

Ohio State’s Dr. Daniel Janies, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, has been instrumental in developing SupraMap, a Web application for “integrating genetic, evolutionary, geospatial, and temporal data.” I think this is a step in the right direction considering the implications of an impending global epidemic. It will definitely be interesting to see how the war against the virus will turn out.

A Russian malware author with involvement in the Zlob malware family, one of the most prolific malware families in 2008 thanks to its successful mimicking of video codecs, has left a message for the Windows Defender team inside a sample analyzed by French researchers. The message is a follow-up to a previous note left in October, and is basically greeting Microsoft in respect to their improving detection rates for this malware family.

” I saw your post in the blog about my previous message. Just want to say ‘Hello’ from Russia. You are really good guys. It was a surprise for me that Microsoft can respond on threats so fast. I can’t sign here now (he-he, sorry), how it was some years ago for more seriously vulnerability for all Windows ;) Happy New Year, guys, and good luck! P.S. BTW, we are closing soon. Not because of your work. :-)) So, you will not see some of my great ;) ideas in that family of software. Try to search in exploits/shellcodes and rootkits. Also, it is funny (probably for you), but Microsoft offered me a job to help improve some of Vista’s protection. It’s not interesting for me, just a life’s irony.”

Who’s this guy? The malware author claims that has coded a critical vulnerability affecting Windows a couple of years ago, and that Microsoft has once offered him a job presumably as a researcher. This message clearly indicates the ongoing multitasking mode of cybercriminals. Moreover, even though the author is trying to distance himself from future Zlob releases, the malware family is not going away anytime soon despite that his campaigns have been somehow affected by Microsoft and, of course, the community as a whole.

BlackBerry Storm Fails The Test

The Storm has definitely not lived up to my expectations. While I have not encountered the litany of issues that some reviewers have , I nonetheless have been unable to embrace the Storm’s key selling point - the clickable touchscreen. As old school as it may seem, despite my appreciation for the iPhone 3G - especially once battery life improved post-launch - I could never actually make the switch to it as my primary device for one reason - my touchscreen typing skills are horrendous. So the thought of a product that would meld the sexiness of a touchscreen device, with the tactile response of a traditional keyboard was intriguing, to say the least.

Unfortunately, the Storm hasn’t delivered on that promise. If anything, my typing was actually a bit faster on the iPhone than it is on the Storm. And while it’s not the sole culprit, I definitely find it a bit disconcerting that the center of the Storm’s screen has more give then the outer edges. While it’s not the primary reason I had problems typing on the Storm, it certainly didn’t help when I was trying to power through e-mails.

The iPhone 3G is a superior media player; it has the best mobile Web browser around; it has WiFi; and the iPhone store has a surprisingly large number of useful (and/or entertaining) apps, many of which are still free. On this last point, the Blackberry app store is expected to launch in March, though it remains to be seen how many developers will set up shop.
